East West Players celebrates its 47th Season, themed “Spirited Away,” with its dazzling Anniversary Visionary Awards Dinner & Silent Auction, and salutes those who have made a valuable impact on the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. The fundraising event will take place on Monday April 22, 2013 at the Universal Hilton. Proceeds from the gala will benefit East West Players’ educational and artistic programs.

“EWP and the APA performing arts community continue to expand the spectrum of voices and stories of our vast, complex yet underrepresented community,” says Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director of East West Players. “This year’s Visionary Award Honorees reflect some of the best of our community, who raise the visibility of APAs through their craft – Cold Tofu for the past 30 years, and Steven Yeun as a breakout star on the hugely popular television show, The Walking Dead.”

Tamlyn Tomita (Karate Kid Part II, Joy Luck Club) will serve as mistress of ceremonies of the event.

Award-winning composer Nathan Wang (Beijing Olympics/Shaolin Monks, Steven Spielberg’s Oscar Award-winning film The Last Days) will serve as the evening’s Musical Director.

COLD TOFU, receiving the Visionary Award, is the nation’s premier Asian American comedy improv group.  Under the leadership of its current Artistic Director Helen H. Ota and core cast members, COLD TOFU continues to grow and develop its distinctive brand of comedy. The members of COLD TOFU consistently strive to create unforgettable characters, improvised scenes and original sketch materials. From its inception in 1981 by Marilyn Tokuda, Denice Kumagai, Judy Momii and Irma Escamilla to today, COLD TOFU has grown to 25 members who perform improv shows regularly in historic Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles and MC events for several community organizations. COLD TOFU shares the thrill of performing improv and sketch, while training up-and-coming performers by providing improv workshops year-round.

Steven Yeun, receiving the Breakout Performance Award, currently stars on AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, where his portrayal of ‘Glenn,’ the pizza boy turned “walker killer” has developed into a leading role on the show and has quickly become a favorite for both fans and critics alike.  The Walking Dead has become the most watched drama series in basic cable history, and launched internationally in over 120 countries in 33 different languages. The Breakout Performance award was created to recognize an individual or group who, through an outstanding performance, has made a significant contribution to the community by helping raise the visibility of the Asian Pacific experience.

Additional honorees and entertainment to be announced at a later date.

East West Players’ 47th Anniversary Visionary Awards Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Hilton Universal City, 555 Universal Hollywood Drive, Universal City, CA 91608. The EVOKE New Works Festival debuted in October 2012 and celebrated the diverse voices of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Asian Pacific Americans. Under the direction of Alison M. De La Cruz, four excerpts of new work ignited the EWP stage which included “Untitled” by Rich Yap, “Chubby Masculine Chinese Daughter” by Chueh Jun-Fung, “Karma and Jihad Meet at a Bar” by Raja Bhattar and Alicia Virani, and “Lai Noi, Noi Lai: Retelling” by Nguyen Nguyen with Jay Carlon and Ian Isles. EVOKE also featured the “Invisibility Project,” a video installation by Mia Nakano.

East West Players’ EVOKE New Works Festival will return in March with artists who will present the diverse stories and voices of South Asian American Diaspora.

East West Players has extended the submission deadline to February 4, 2013. Artists (solo, duets or trios) from a variety of performance genres and multi-disciplinary intersections are invited to explore EWP’s 47th Season, Spirited Away. Evoke Artists should consider the notion of being spirited away by something or someone.

Submissions running time should be no longer than 10-15 minutes. Pieces should embrace the spirit of the Festival’s artistic pursuit of new performance work with an easy-tech approach to an earthy and minimalist approach to environment.

The EVOKE New Works Festival, Directed by Alison De La Cruz, will engage participant artists in a collaborative performance context to present and create original work. As an ensemble of Festival artists, participants will also have an opportunity to collaborate with each other and co-create and perform an original element in the show. Artists should be interested in collaborating with a Director who enjoys dramaturgy and invites collaboration.

The Festival offers participant artists the opportunity to engage in dialogue with audiences and the broader artistic community through a variety of facilitated post-show talkbacks and spontaneous conversations at the Festival’s courtyard brunch.

The Evoke New Works Festival and development process provides a small honorarium and an opportunity to workshop a new piece over a 4-night run in a 240-seat house. New and emerging artists are highly encouraged to apply.

EVOKE Festival

East West Players (EWP), the nation’s largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work and the longest-running professional theatre of color in the country, debuts EVOKE: A Festival of Diverse Voices. EVOKE will take place October 11-14, 2012 at East West Players in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

The EVOKE Festival nurtures artists and new performance works that expand the dialogue about the Asian Pacific American experiences. This inaugural installation of the  EWP EVOKE Festival presents the vivid reality and imaginations of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender APA artists. EVOKE audience members will have unique opportunities to explore the work and engage with artists Raja Bhattar, Alicia Virani, Chueh Jun-Fung, Nguyen Nguyen and Rich Yap. EVOKE is directed by multi-disciplinary theatre artist Alison De La Cruz. As a dramaturg and director, De La Cruz has had the pleasure of working with notable queer artists such as the Butchlalis de Panochitlan and D’Lo in their new work development processes.

“In line with the mission of East West Players to produce artistic works that foster dialogue exploring Asian Pacific experiences, the EVOKE performance series is not only an  introduction to new artists, but a celebration of these emerging voices in the community,” says Tim Dang, EWP’s Producing Artistic Director. “We are excited to bring these stories to the stage.”

All performances will be staged at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts at 120 Judge John Aiso St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. EVOKE will run October 11 through October 14, 2012. October 11, 12, and 13th shows start at 8pm. The October 14th show starts at 2pm, preceded by a Family “Bring Your Own Brunch”  gathering in the East West Players courtyard, starting at 12 noon. All are welcome to join. Community organizations will have information tables and food trucks will have savory snacks available for purchase.
